Its about time
PCOS is getting a New Name
In 2021, a task force of international experts recommended changing the name of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
The new name
This task force of international experts recommended changing the name of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to “Metabolic Reproductive Syndrome” (MRS).
The proposed new name better reflects the fact that the condition is not just a reproductive disorder, but also involves metabolic and cardiovascular risks. The name change is not yet official, but it has generated a lot of discussion and debate in the medical community.
Proponents of the name change argue that it will improve understanding of the condition and reduce the stigma associated with the current name. They also point out that the new name better reflects the fact that many women with the condition have metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance, which can lead to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Critics of the name change argue that the term “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome” has been widely used for decades and changing it could lead to confusion and misunderstandings. They also point out that not all women with the condition have metabolic abnormalities and that the current name accurately reflects the presence of ovarian cysts, which is a key diagnostic feature of the condition.
At this time, the proposed name change is still under discussion and has not been adopted as the official name of the condition.
What do you think? Should the name be changed? If you agree, what do you suggest?
